Ethiopia Genji Challa
DIRECT TRADE COFFEE
This fully washed lot from Genji Challa is brimming with ripe, juicy fruit characteristics - expect a bright and lively fruit acidity like orange or grapefruit balanced by a light, refreshing sweetness like melon or stone fruit. This lot also has a notably syrupy and long-lasting mouthfeel, especially so for Ethiopian coffee.
Genji Challa washing station is located in the southwestern district of Gera and is the second to be owned and operated by the Nano Challa Cooperative. The Nano Challa Cooperative was formed in 2004, starting with just 24 members. In 2010 they became part of a project funded by NGO TechnoServe, who started to give instruction on farming and coffee quality. After initial success, TechnoServe repeated these initiatives and funded the building of several other washing stations in the Gera, Jimma and Illubabor regions of Ethiopia. In 2016 a group of cooperatives (including Nano Challa) formed the Kata Muduga Cooperative Union to meet the growing demand for the premium coffees now being grown in this region. This allowed for collaboration in the marketing and export of their coffees, as well as being able to grow and expand to include more small holder producers in their operations. This growth led to the building of the Genji Challa station, which started processing its first coffees in 2018, making this a relatively new washing station. Kata Muduga is now renowned for the incredible coffee quality produced by their washing stations.
