Sourcing Story

49th Parallel Crop To Cup Story

Abu Geisha returns to 49th! This was the coffee that launched the Small Lot Series program, first being purchased in the 2018 Best of Panama auction. We were so taken with the coffee’s quality and character we reached out to producer José Guillermo Luttrell Pretto (Jr.) to continue to source this coffee directly.

José is a 3rd generation coffee producer, owning and operating Abu Coffee. They are a relatively young farm with only 6 years in production but continue to grow in quality and prestige every year, achieving great results in the annual Best of Panama auctions.

Abu Geisha is located in the region of Cañas Verdes, Boquete in western Panama. Here José’s trees grow in rich fertile soil on the slopes of Barú Volcano National park. They are organically shaded from the sun by native trees that grow in harmony with local flora and fauna. The conditions here are almost perfect for coffee growing and lead to exceptional cup quality.

About the processing: In his washed processing, Jose applies a double phase anaerobic process where the coffee cherries are pulped and "dry fermented" for up to 30 hours before being fully hand-washed with clean mountain water. Coffee cherries at Abu Geisha are 100% hand picked for maximum ripeness and expertly sorted. This processing method leaves an extremely distinct and fruity character in the coffee, enhancing complexity, sweetness and body.
