This is a smaller lot of peaberry screen size separation coming from Gaturiri coffee factory in Nyeri, central Kenya. Expect bright refreshing red fruit acidity complimented by a heavy, juicy mouthfeel and deep sweetness, like brown sugar or molasses.

Crop to Cup Story

Gaturiri is a Kikuyu word for “the shrubs.” It is a known place where people visit to collect herbs for medicines for humans and livestock. The factory is 3km outside of the town of Karatina, in Mathira, Nyeri, sitting at the south-western foot of Mount Kenya.

Gaturiri is affiliated to Barichu Cooperative Society, one of the four factories that make up this cooperative (Karatina, Karindundu, Gaturiri and Gatomboya). It was registered to the Cooperative Development and Coffee Board of Kenya in October 1996.

Gaturiri serves about 1,500 small scale producers and produces approximately 600 tons of cherry. Fresh river water from the Kirigu River is used during processing. The average farm size is 250 trees, with SL28 and Ruiru 11 being the predominant varietals grown. In addition to coffee, maize, banana and beans are the main agricultural crops grown by the factory members.
