Sourcing Story
49th Parallel Crop To Cup Story
La Leona is another coffee we found on the cupping table in the 2019 ‘Best of Honduras’ Late Harvest auction. Produced by José María López, La Leona placed 7th out of the 20+ lots entered. It’s a fully washed process catuai variety demonstrating the outstanding complexity and intensity we love so much from the Santa Barbara region.
José María López's farm was bought approximately 30 years ago and most of the farm was already planted before this time, which has caused the farm's productivity to be low and therefore not very sustainable. This is beginning to change as the farm is replanted with high quality varieties such as Pacas and Catuai.
José and his family use almost all the residual waste from the farm, transforming it into organic fertilizer. The intention is that no by-product is wasted and Jose and his family are learning to make new organic products for their farm. Furthermore, they are very receptive to learning about new coffee processing methods in order to improve quality.
