This is our second time buying coffee from Gahahe and we’re once again impressed by the clean, complex and intense coffee they’re producing. Expect an intense cup with very lively citrus and red berry notes.

Sourcing Story

49th Parallel Crop To Cup Story

The Gahahe Washing Station in Burundi was built in 1989, located in the Kayanza commune in the Kayanza province. It lies at an altitude of 1,805m. The name 'Gahahe' comes from the igihahe trees that were once found in this region.

The branches of these trees look like cacti and grow in a round, balloon-like shape which is why they are more commonly known in English as the 'Candelabra Tree'. Due to the number of these trees in this region, the Kirundi phrase “kubavomere batumisha” was used to describe the land which means 'always covered in green.

This washing station collects cherries from over 1,250 local coffee farmers spread over the 16 neighbouring collines. During the harvest season, Gahahe processes more than 600 tons of coffee. Gahahe has placed well in multiple Cup of Excellence competitions in recent years and continues to grow in reputation and quality.

Try the Benjamin Paz instead !

Too fruity and thin for me. Tastes like bad Kopi Luawk/Thin Folgers.

Slow - Slow - Slow Delivery / Poor Customer Service

Rate this buying experience a 1 out of 10 - Not a customer centric organization. Just made my second purchase online and similar to the first: it's terribly slow and when you follow up to locate your order they simply suggest you be patient. My order shipped from Burnaby to Montreal and Back to Vancouver. I can order products from Europe and receive faster than 49th Parallel can ship in the same city.
