Sourcing Story

49th Parallel Crop To Cup Story

FAF (Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza) are a coffee exporter based in São Paulo, Brazil. Their aim is to enable sustainable coffee production by prioritizing cup quality, fair pricing and environmentally responsible growing practices.

Azahar are a specialty coffee exporter based in Armenia, Colombia. They work directly with farmers all over the county, investing in creating long-term, quality-focused relationships with producers and roasters.

Brew Guides

1. Fill the water reservoir and turn on the machine by pressing the “solo” or “lungo” button
2. Shake the 49th Capsule for 2-3 seconds and insert the capsule into the machine
3. Place a cup on the tray and press the “solo” button for extraction

For the best result, please program the water volume of your machine before use and clean the machine by running a water cycle before and after the extraction. Once you set up the water volume, you do not need to set it up again.

How to program the water volume on your Nespresso® OriginalLine® Machine (Refer to manufacturer’s guide for complete instructions)

*Optimal yield is 22ml - 28ml

1. Turn on the machine and insert the capsule

2. Place a cup and press to hold down the Solo button while brewing. Release the button when the desired volume is reached.

Faulty capsule design?

I was super excited to see these at my local London Drugs, thinking the extra cost was worth it to mimic 49th Parallel coffee at home. Unfortunately, it is the weakest, most watery coffee ever. I suspect the capsule is at fault. The overflow reservoir fills up at least halfway each time and the water is contaminated with grounds. With any other brand, I end up with just a tiny bit of water in that area. I'm halfway through the box, hoping a minor change might make a difference, and each time I end up wondering why I bothered. Please rework the design!

Coffee is great, capsule design not so much

We normally use 49 Parallel coffee in our espresso machine but aren’t able to use the machine for about 3 months so we purchased a Nespresso machine to bridge the gap. The capsules from 49th make much better coffee than the propriety capsules from Nespresso but are very fussy to use as you have to really fiddle with them to get them to fit. But the end result is worth it.

So Much Promise - A Big Let Down

I was so excited to be able to have 49th Parallel for our Nespresso machine, however these use a really strange foil that doesn't seal properly and leaves a very weak coffee output. Very, very weak. Even on the smallest brew size, and especially compared to the normal strength of Nespresso capsules or even a normal espresso brew. Unfortunately, I don't forsee there being any resolution to this so long as they use the foil style seal.

Poor Design

The capsule uses foil which mates poorly with the machine and doesn’t push the water through properly. This results in really weak coffee. And this is not even compared to Nespresso coffees which are generally quite strong, this is compared to a normal super automatic americano with fixed dispensing of water. It’s a flawed design, unsure why they didn’t use a proper design, patents perhaps?
