This lot from La Maravilla is a superb representation of the Parainema variety grown by Juan Evangelista in Santa Barbara, Honduras. In the cup expect a sparkling, vibrant citrus acidity balanced by complex notes of licorice and other sweet herbal qualities.

Sourcing Story

Each year, when visiting Juan Evangelista, he proudly takes us to his nursery. “More Pacamara!” he proudly exclaims. With every good story, there’s a twist. Juan’s variety is not Pacamara, but instead, Parainema - a hybrid variety that is resistant to rust and nematode infestation.

This variety began in 1981 as part of a series of experiments to address producers' issues with diseases and pests and was known as Sarchimor T-5269. First plantings were in Costa Rica from 2006 - 2008, and it was introduced to Honduras in 2010 as “Parainema.”

We’ve been buying coffee from Juan for over 8 years now and he’s an absolute pleasure to work with. His coffees are always superbly consistent, reliable and unmistakable in their character. In 2021 we’ve been lucky enough to try some offerings from some of Juan’s children as well who are now growing their own Parainema, continuing the family tradition.
