Kenya Thambana

Kenya Thambana

The cooperative society of Thambana represents a total of about 3,000 farmers and includes 3 washing stations. Our Thambana comes from a washing station called Kathima. Located in Embu County, situated to the east of the more commonly seen growing regions Nyeri and Kirinyaga, but still within sight of Mount Kenya.

Many smallholders are inter-cropping to improve the biodiversity of the region and the security of their harvest, planting banana, and macadamia in addition to coffee.

Like most Kenyan growing regions, coffee in Embu benefits from its equatorial location and two distinct annual rainy seasons, resulting in the main crop around December-January and a “fly” crop harvested in the summer.

It should be no surprise by now that East Africa hasn’t escaped climate disruption in recent years, and Kenyan production is very low this year by comparison to last. Drought, irregular rains, and a frost in Othaya have cut yields for both main and fly crops, but you know what? Despite the low amounts, we still managed to bring in a couple sweet lots. This is our last Kenyan coffee of the year - Please enjoy it!

For all types of filter coffee brewing, we recommend the following parameters:

    • Brewing ratio: 1g coffee to 16g water
    • Slurry temperature (coffee+water): 195-200° F
    • Extraction: 20-21%
