In this lot from Sambewe, we found a lot of refreshing green tea sweetness with a liveliness and vibrancy reminding us of dark berries or currants. Expect a lighter, juicy mouthfeel and higher intensity.

49th Parallel Crop To Cup Story

Located in Tanzania, the Sambewe Farmers Group is a group of 344 farmers who were established as an Agriculture Marketing Cooperative Society (AMCOS) in 2007. Together, they are producing approximately 440 bags of coffee per year.

There are 344 smallholder farmers who deliver small quantities of cherries to the AMCOS, or to collection centers in nearby villages. The average farm size for producers delivering to the Sambewe washing station is half to two hectares. These farms have clay loam soil and are organic by default. Organic compost is becoming more common, pruning is less common. A farmer can typically have fewer than 1000 trees per hectare, and one tree typically produces a quantity of cherries equal to less than 100 - 200 grams of green coffee.

Farmers are delivering a mix of local improved Bourbon hybrids like N39 and Kent 423.

This is a fully washed lot, with a parchment fermentation ranging between 18-36 hours in water. Parchment is then soaked in clean water for 8-12 hours before being moved to drying tables. The drying process is performed on raised african beds in the sun, taking between 8-14 days.

    I recommend this product
    Not bad but not great

This coffee was decent but didn’t have any distinguishing characteristics. The flavor is a little light and was hoping for more of a sweet berry note.

    The best of the best

Tried 15 to 20 different blends over the past couple of years and this is the only one we order now. Far superior to the rest, although the breakfast blend is great when they have it.
