Description

A rare small lot from the mountains of Eastern Haraz, Yemen, this coffee offers a cup profile that is deeply sweet, fruit-forward and distinctly spiced. Roasted as a light-medium filter, it opens with dried cherry and ripe plum, followed by cocoa, baking spice and a syrupy sweetness that reflects both the natural process and Yemen’s historic coffee terroir.  This is one of the only Yemen coffees currently available in Canada and one of our rarest small lot releases of the season. Expressive, complex and extremely limited, Yemen Haraz Sharqi is a rare opportunity to taste one of coffee’s oldest origins through a modern specialty process.

ORIGINE

Yemen is one of coffee’s most historic origins, with a coffee culture that reaches back centuries. In the mountains of Haraz, coffee is grown on steep terraced hillsides where farming families have adapted to an arid climate, limited water and rugged terrain over many generations. This lot comes from Eastern Haraz in Yemen’s Sana’a Governorate and was produced by approximately 200 smallholder farmers connected through the Sharqi Haraz Cooperative. The coffee was curated through Pearl of Tehama, a family run Yemeni exporter connected to the Muslot family, whose work has helped bring small quantities of exceptional Yemeni coffee to specialty roasters like 49th. Unlike a traditional Yemen natural, this coffee was processed centrally in very small batches. Freshly harvested cherries were placed in sealed tanks for anaerobic fermentation before being dried slowly on raised beds. This careful process deepens the coffee’s fruit character, sweetness and spice while preserving the unmistakable identity of Haraz. Yemeni coffees are difficult to produce, challenging to export and rarely available in meaningful quantities. This release is a rare opportunity for our customers to experience one of coffee’s oldest and most distinctive origins.
