SOURCING STORY
This was the coffee that launched our Small Lot Series program, first purchased at the 2018 Best of Panama auction. We were immediately impressed with its character and reached out to producer José Luttrell to continue sourcing it directly. Since then, we’ve built a close relationship with José and visit the farm each year. José’s family history is intertwined with the very beginnings of coffee in Panama. His great-great-grandfather was among the first large-scale producers and exporters in Boquete. Over the years, however, the family farms changed hands, and later generations pursued careers in the city or abroad. José followed a similar path—studying engineering in the United States and working there for many years before returning to Panama City to continue his career. His passion for coffee was rekindled after his father brought him to visit their farm in Cañas Verdes in the early 2000s, just as the Geisha variety was being rediscovered and captivating the specialty coffee world. Inspired by their family’s legacy and the extraordinary potential of Geisha, José and his father began investing more deeply in the farm. When his father, affectionately known as “Abu,” passed away a few years later, José took on the responsibility of carrying forward the vision with a profound sense of purpose. Abu Geisha is located in Cañas Verdes, Boquete, on the fertile slopes of Barú Volcano National Park. Here, Geisha trees flourish in rich volcanic soils, naturally shaded by native trees that support a diverse ecosystem of flora and fauna. These conditions are nearly ideal for coffee cultivation, resulting in extraordinary quality in the cup.
