Description
Nestled in the mountains of northern Peru, San Ignacio is home to thousands of smallholder coffee farmers who cultivate coffee using traditional organic farming practices. Coffee is often grown alongside bananas, beans, corn, and native shade trees, creating diverse farm ecosystems that support both quality and sustainability. This lot was produced by Luis Colunche on his five acre farm, La Fortuna, located in the community of Nueva Alianza. An agronomist by training, Luis inherited the farm from his parents and combines technical expertise with generations of family farming knowledge. The result is a coffee that reflects both the unique terroir of San Ignacio and Luis's commitment to quality.
SOURCING STORY
For Luis Colunche, coffee is both a family legacy and a profession. After inheriting La Fortuna from his parents, he chose to pursue agronomy to better understand how farming practices influence coffee quality and long-term farm sustainability. During harvest, cherries are selectively hand picked, sorted and floated before being depulped and fermented for 36 hours. The coffee is then washed and dried on raised beds for approximately 18 days at the farm's micro-mill. Luis works alongside Origin Coffee Lab, an organization that helps small producers improve coffee quality, traceability and access to specialty markets. Through this partnership, producers receive technical support and quality premiums that can be reinvested into their farms and communities, helping strengthen the future of coffee production in San Ignacio.
