Sourcing Story

49th Parallel Crop To Cup Story

This is our second year sourcing coffee from João Hamilton and his farm Sítio Canaã after being very happy with the lots we had sourced in the previous year. Sítio Canaã is situated between 1200 - 1340 m.a.s.l, just outside the city of São Paulo. João is growing Catuai, Mundo Novo, Sumatra, and Bourbon varieties. He is also separating some Obata that we especially enjoy.

Previously growing coffee for the commodity market, in 2006 João made the switch to a more sustainable, environmentally friendly and quality focussed approach. Working with local green coffee exporters FAF (Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza), João is now recognized to be at the forefront of specialty coffee being produced in Brazil.

João is doing fantastic work growing clean, complex coffees and continuing to push the upper boundaries of coffee quality in Brazil. We look forward to continuing to develop this relationship in the future!

About the variety: Released in 2000, Obata is a cross between a Timor hybrid and Villa Sarchi, developed by the Instituto Agronomico (IAC) of Sao Paulo State in Campinas, Brazil. It is now also cultivated in Costa Rica since 2014. It has great yield potential and disease resistance while maintaining excellent cup quality.
